David Archuleta - The Songwriter

Ask David about writing songs, does he capture song ideas the moment they strike him?

I see tremendous growth in David as a songwriter - he digs into lyrics, considers words, lingers over them and has a master plan of the effect for the song. David has soul.

Watching his vlog the other day showed me there was an intimacy with David at the piano - decisive sweet and wise. I marvel at the dexterity and inventiveness of his creative process. We captured inspiration at a moment in time.

Musical genres have largely defined categories, but in recent years all attempts to categorize music has given way because musicians tend to produce music in any style they choose, without worrying themselves with genres they are placed in.

David's comment in his recent vlog about working with band members that speak different languages peaked by interest. Will his new foundation he his building reveal a category of music that is essentially acoustic and introspective. Perhaps it will be piano, drums, or a solitary guitar, with international flavors of melodies.

Regardless, it's simply going to be about the song, an art form which has at its essence, the simple craft of songwriting. David is still rather like a chameleon, changing with the winds of his goals and dreams and perhaps marketing demands. David is the real deal as true as an artist has to be and remain live and well.

Sometimes David even breaks the rules surprising everyone, and crosses over the mainstream commercial industry without a label and does it his way. Despite what some may say, his process is first and foremost not about money, it's about art and his love for music and the unadorned song.

His less traveled road is still in front of him and still calling to him. David is stretching himself to creative limits, to produce real songs, work that we'll still like to hear thirty years from now. Music that speaks to him and to his fans, music that connects and arouses emotions and passion, music that makes a difference.

The music business remains so helplessly screwed up right now with lousy values; it both breaks my heart and defies belief. Artists like David Archuleta come along few and far in between and I am looking forward to him setting standards and integrity with values in the music industry that we can all be proud of presently and in the future.
