Kimberley Locke was the first Idol to reach No. 1 on the dance charts, followed by Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks, Blake Lewis and Adam Lambert.
The Adult Contemporary and Adult Top 40 charts have also been dominated by Idols. Clarkson was the first to top charts in both formats, followed by Daughtry. Locke has three AC No. 1s, all with holiday songs. Underwood has also topped the AC charts, along with Elliott Yamin, David Cook, Sparks and David Archuleta, while Allen and Lambert have reigned on the Adult Top 40 charts.
In an unbroken string dating back to season one, which premiered on Fox-TV 10 years ago tonight, every Idol winner (see list below) has had at least one No. 1 on the Billboard charts, from Clarkson to Phillip Phillips, winner of season 11. His version of "Home" debuted on top of the Rock Digital Songs chart two weeks ago.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — "American Idol" runner-up and Murray, Utah, native David Archuleta says he's "excited" about working on a Philippine TV series.Associated Press
His Filipino co-stars Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Eula Caballero welcomed him with flower garlands at Manila's airport Friday. They'll be shooting the TV5 drama the next few weeks.
Fans and journalists jostled to take pictures as the 20-year-old singer emerged from the airport gate.
Archuleta said in a video blog before leaving the U.S. that he has taken acting lessons to prepare. He says: "I'm excited about it. ... This is a new experience for me."
TV5 Vice President Perci Intalan says "it's a dream come true" for the network to have Archuleta in a Filipino show.

"American Idol" Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta announced some big plans on Monday night at a concert in Salt Lake City, Utah. He'll be heading out on a two-year proselytizing mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
"I can't tell you how special it's been being able to come back here," he told fans in his hometown. "There's no place like home. I always say that... While I'm home in front of you guys here tonight, I would like to make a special announcement that I've chosen to serve a full-time mission."
The crowd erupted into cheers, and Archuleta was so overwhelmed he began to cry, covering his face to hide his eyes from his fans.
"It's not because someone told me that I was supposed to do it," he said when he regained composure. "Not because I no longer want to do music anymore, but it's because it's the feeling that I felt that I need to do next in my life. It's the same feeling that I've always followed and tried to follow in my life... I've learned to trust that feeling, and I've learned that I need to answer when it calls."
Archuleta's mission will begin sometime after the new year. There are many strict rules that LDS missionaries must adhere to -- not the least of which is a restriction on music. While on his mission, Archuleta won't be able to listen to music that isn't religious. Music with any romantic lyrics will be banned -- including his own.
"American Idol" season 7 runner-up David Archuleta is putting music on hold for two years while he embarks on a Mormon mission. The 20-year-old Murray, Utah native revealed his call to serve at the Salt Lake City stop of his My Kind of Christmas Tour, telling the crowd, "I would like to make a special announcement: that I've chosen to serve a full-time mission."
Slightly overwhelmed with emotion and fighting back tears, Archie, as he's affectionately known, explained to an audience of over 2,000 at Abravanel Hall why he felt a two-year mission was his calling at this juncture in his life. "It's not because someone told me I was supposed to do it and not because I no longer want to do music anymore," he said. "It's because it's what I feel I need to do next in my life. It's the same feeling that I've always tried to follow in my life -- the feeling that's allowed me to have the opportunities I've had, the challenges and the blessings, too. And I've learned to trust that feeling and answer when it calls. That's the reason why I know I have to do this in my life."
It's unknown where Archuleta will be called to serve, but like other LDS (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints members), he will be expected to adhere to a strict set of rules, which includes a dress code (dark trousers, white dress shirts, and ties are usually required) and a daily schedule -- typically up by 6:30 a.m. and proselytizing by 10:00 a.m. Young men and women on a mission are generally allowed only two phone calls in a year, both to their mother, on Christmas Day and Mother's Day.
One concert date remains on Archuleta's Christmas run. On Wednesday, he performs at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek, Colorado.
David Archuleta turns 21 on Dec. 28.
Because of his beliefs, the Murray native most likely will not be celebrating the occasion with a glass of Irish coffee.
So it seemed fitting that you can compare his Monday night performance at a sold-out Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City to a glass of milk. Pleasant and wholesome, yet for the large part unremarkable.
Archuleta is about to finish his nationwide "My Kind of Christmas" tour. He was greeted with standing ovations all night, and was in fine voice, with his low tenor notable for a warm, graceful tone with a bright, full timbre. He continues to get more comfortable on stage each time he appears in Utah, and feeds off the continuing support — not to mention unbridled adoration — he receives in his home state.
While his vocal ability wowed throughout, the stage show was considerably less decorated than his last Abravanel Hall show in Utah, in 2009, right after he released his album "Christmas From the Heart." The 2009 show featured dramatic lighting that, among other things, illuminated three conical Christmas trees and four ornamental baubles that hung from the rafters. This time, the stage was underwhelmingly bare, save for a Christmas tree at stage left and a large canvas backing that illustrated Archuleta’s name. Most of the time, the stage seemed to glow with muted red lighting as Archuleta stomped around the stage in understated clothing.
The pacing of the show was problematic, as after percussion-heavy renditions of "Sleigh Ride" and two other Christmas songs, Archuleta performed four consecutive songs from his pop albums. Then it was an abrupt transition to a somnambulant version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and then "Climb Every Mountain," and next an intermission — although it was only 40 minutes into the show. Coupled with opening act Jeff LeBlanc’s 30-minute set that included no holiday songs, it was almost as if this show could have been held on the Fourth of July with its lack of holiday material. In addition, the sound mix was off as Archuleta’s percussionist sounded like Big Drummer Man — rather than a little drummer boy — and the pounding overwhelmed and overshadowed most of the other music.
But the highlights came in the second half, when adult and children choirs joined Archuleta, along with the Lyceum Philharmonic Orchestra from American Heritage School in American Fork. This is where Archuleta’s show shined, along with his fine selection of songs, which were unorthodox but exciting compared to the tried-but-true-but-boring selections of other holiday shows. Archuleta’s rendition of "Ave Maria" was breathtaking in its reverence and phrasing, and his performance of the French Christmas carol "Pat-a-pan," with a rollicking arrangement from Kurt Bestor, was fun and galloping.
David Osmond, Jenny Frogley, and even Archuleta’s mother Lupe Archuleta were among other surprise guests to the show, which at its best was sublime. It was too bad the entire evening wasn’t perfect. But, perhaps to keep in the holiday spirit, we should offer Archuleta the milk of human kindness.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — American Idol David runner-up Archuleta says he will take a break from his singing career to serve a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The contestant from the 2007 season made the announcement during a Christmas concert Monday in downtown Salt Lake City. A video of the concert on Archuleta's website shows him crying as he tells the crowd about his plans.
Church spokesman Eric Hawkins confirmed Archuleta's announcement on Tuesday, but declined to say where the singer will serve.
More than 52,000 church members currently are serving full-time missions worldwide. Most are men between the ages of 19 and 21.
David Archuleta has never been kissed. Kicking back on a couch at Hilton Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, the 21-year-old singer burst into spasms of childlike giggles when we asked him about girls.
“Fans have tried to kiss me,” he said coyly. “But they usually don’t succeed. I have quick reflexes. It’s okay if my grandma or my mum and sister kiss me on the cheek, but otherwise, it’s just weird.”
For young Archuleta, a kiss isn’t just a kiss. “I feel that it’s very important and it’s not something you should just give away. I know sometimes people go like: ‘Oh, you’re cute, I’m gonna kiss you’, but for me, sharing a kiss means you care for someone, that you feel affection for them. I don’t wanna be giving it away like candy.”
He added he has never been in a relationship. “I haven’t found that someone special yet and I’m still saving my first kiss for whoever that is.”
His single, My Kind Of Perfect, he said, epitomises his quest for the right girl.
“It’s my perfect love song,” he shared with a twinkle in his eyes. “It’s for a future girl who I don’t know yet. I wrote that song while thinking about who is she going to be? Or have I already met her?”
The affable pop singer channelled his hopeful longing at his concert in Stadium Negara, Kuala Lumpur, the following night, bringing on that honeyed charm that so effectively lulled nearly 2,500 fans.
He looked completely immersed in a visceral calm as he sang the maple syrup-drenched verses of My Kind Of Perfect while playing the piano. “It’s my love song,” he told fans, his face shining with mirthful belief.
Maybe I’ve known you all my life / Is she the one? Is it today? / Will I turn the corner / see my future in a beautiful face, maybe, he sang.
Indeed, it was a sweet treat filled with sugary serenades for fans of the pop singer that night. No more was he the shy little boy we conversed with earlier.
Onstage, young Archuleta possessed the pomp and readiness of a much older performer, radiating surety and confidence all through the one-hour plus affair.
Archuleta, who emerged the runner-up on the hit reality series, American Idol, in 2008 kicked off the set with the catchy Stomping The Roses, brandishing the energetic opening with youthful enthusiasm.
If anything, the absence of fireworks and fancy costume changes meant that Archuleta had only one thing to rely on – his voice. He’d used it well, too, flaunting his signature vocal prowess on emotive, baby-smooth numbers that make you just want to smile.
He went on with the radio-friendly A Little Too Not Over You before breaking into an evocative cover of Tears for Fears’ Everybody Wants To Rule The World.
Archuleta may not have the rocking edge of Adam Lambert or the girlish sassiness of Carrie Underwood, but the baby-faced singer certainly has the talent and charisma to pull off his own show.
He ended the night with his hit single Crush, looking thoroughly ecstatic as he poured his heart out.
BABYFACE David Archuleta showed that he had the skills to thrill young fans on Tuesday evening at his first ever, full-blown concert in Malaysia.
On his second visit to our shores, the 20-year-old Utah native belted out his own popular tunes as well as giving a spin on some classic hits for thousands of fans at Stadium Negara for an hour and a half, as part of his 'The Other Side of Down' tour.
Scheduled to start at 8pm, concert goers began to fill up the stadium from 7.30pm onwards. Although the stadium was nowhere close to being packed, there was a whole lot of love for David within the stadium grounds, with clusters of fans singing out his hit Something 'Bout Love before there were any signs of the concert starting.
Upcoming homegrown artiste Hao Ren, who is under the organizer Sony Music label, appeared on stage at 8.30pm, signalling the start of the concert and for fans, it was time to scream more so for David then Hao Ren. After singing only one song with the help of dancers, the winner of two awards at the 2011 MYAstro Music Awards, gave the audience a little introduction before leaving the stage for David.
After his band appeared, fans did not have to wait too long for their 'Idol' to come on stage. Showing off his Bahasa Malaysia skills with "Apa khabar Malaysia?", he launched into his first song Stomping The Roses and moving along to the title of his tour The Other Side of Down.
The 2008 American Idol runner-up then got the crowd excited with his hit A Little Too Not Over You and gave a little advise about love before going on to Love Don't Hate.
However, the youthful David got most attention when he went on to sing the upbeat number Something 'Bout Love - which got the fans both young and old singing along with him.
David also showed a more mature side of him when he sang a cover of Tears For Fears hit, Everybody Wants To Rule The World. The girls in the audience got a sneak peak to his own Miss Right, in his single My Kind of Perfect. Many were seen moving their colourful glow sticks in tune with the tender ballad.
Thanking his fans after every song, David shared his dreams through the catchy song Elevator, which was another hit among the audience. After introducing his band, he revealed that he misses his mother when he tours and sang Vanessa Carlton's A Thousand Miles to remember her and touched many with his skills on the piano.
While fans went into a frenzy for the sweet-faced singer, he continued to entertain with Falling Stars before getting more approval from the crowd with his popular tune Touch My Hand. He gave the older audience , many consisting of parents of fans, something to enjoy with Stand By Me, a song made popular by Ben E King.
Calling it a night with Zero Gravity, the singer was enthusiastically jumping around the stage, much to the delight of the fans. His short disappearance backstage also saw fans shrieking more for him, which is obliged with three more songs, including a slow and smooth version of Gnarles Barkley's Crazy on piano. Ending it with another cover Heaven by Bryan Adams and his own hit Crush, the singer thanked his fans before making an exit.
David's naturally friendly personality, strong voice, and joyful smiles made it a happy concert experience for all there.
MANILA, Philippines -- The saying “three’s a charm” worked for third-time visitor David Archuleta.
The “American Idol Season 7” runner-up arrived July 17 in time for his successful Manila concert held July 18 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Fans screamed at the top of their voices at the glimpse of the 20-year-oldAmerican crooner and songwriter. Talent aside, it only needs his boyish charm to perfect a night loaded with one and a half hour of showmanship.
David sang 17 songs from his past and present albums, satisfying the crowd composed of youngsters and oldies.
“Hello Philippines!,” went David who started the show past 9 p.m. with “Stomping The Roses.” His getup was relaxed – black jeans, plain gray shirt and red jacket – making him sweat all over on that hot, humid day.
“Kumusta kayo, Manila? It’s good to be back here. Thank you for coming. It’s my third time here,” David addressed the crowd as he tried to perfect his Tagalog.
No dull moment
The upbeat “The Other Side Of Down,” “Something Bout Love,” “Elevator” sent David dancing and jumping to the beat full of energy, same with “A Little Too Not Over You,” “Love Don’t Hate,” “Touch My Hand,” “My Hands,” “Falling Stars” and his hit “Crush.” The repertoire made the audience sing as if they were singing the national anthem – united, synchronized, and take note, with lyrics memorized.
Not to be missed from the repertoire were covers among them: Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World,” Daniel Bedingfield’s “Gonna Get Thru This” and Bryan Adam’s “Heaven.”
David also shared a piece of advice to the crowd. “Have a dream. Live it, work hard for it even if the others tell you, ‘you can’t.’”
At the middle of the show, David didn’t forget to thank and commend Julie Anne San Jose, who front-acted for him.
“She has an amazing voice,” said David of Julie Anne.
That boyish charm
Showing how talented he is, David sang a couple of songs while playing his keyboard. The left-handed artist didn’t play the guitar, though many expected him to.
Playing his composition “My Kind Of Perfect,” makes David imagine “I wonder if she goes to the theme park… if she likes music just like me…”
During the jam-packed meet-and-greet session held at the event center of SM Megamall a day prior his Manila concert, David told the crowd his “kind of girlfriend:” “Down to earth, loves her family, love to go out and most especially, loves to eat.”
David’s serene voice, beyond the powerful falsettos and ballads relayed sincerity and depth. Beyond being a pop crooner, he’s a total performer. His most uploaded performance attests to this – his rendition, for instance, of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me.”
Playing again on keyboards, “A Thousand Miles,” as David said, is “a song that I like to sing a lot. It reminds me of my mom.” David seemed to forget the chords and lyrics of the song’s second stanza. But with only a boyish smile, he pulled off recovery and was rewarded with loud cheers.
He even changed the lyrics to his fans’ delight: “You know I’d fly a thousand times if I could just see you… Manila.”
David then addressed the cheering crowd, “You guys just make me freeze!”
“Salamat, audience! A big salamat for being here. You guys are amazing. I can’t thank you enough” prompted everybody as he sang his last piece, “Zero Gravity.”
Overwhelmed with the crowd’s plea to come back, David rushed back and said, “This is so amazing, incredible! It’s been remarkable making me come back.”
It was too good to be true, but David Archuleta held captive an audience of wildly cheering fans, as well as a few skeptics, at his concert Monday night at the Araneta Coliseum.
Three years have passed since the boy from Utah placed second in “American Idol” season 7, and although he was quite impressive the first time he performed here inMay 2009, it was a back-to-back concert with the guy who beat him in “Idol,” the other David (Cook).
And even if he has turned 20, Archuleta, in our view, still lacked the depth and experience to pull off a solo show in a venue as imposing as the Big Dome. Well, the audience’s number didn’t reach capacity levels, but the singer-songwriter proved he could hold his own as a young pop star.
His energy flowed like bubbles from a champagne bottle right from the opening song, “Stomping the Roses,” whose light pop-rock beat he magnified through expansive body movements.
He would do these gesticulations throughout the show, along with peculiar, happy-as-a-drunk dance steps that could tease any punk rocker in the crowd. It was quite a sight—a nerdy, clean-cut kid bouncing up and down like he has just turned on to the Sex Pistols.
Almost every tune that followed meant the moon and the stars to the thousands of love-struck teenagers in the crowd. But those who have never heard of Archuleta’s albums couldn’t afford to ignore his earnest vocals in, for instance, “A Little Too Not Over You,” even if the lyrics seem too cutesy for someone in self-denial over a romantic breakup.
But that’s exactly the sort of material that suited Archuleta fine and he didn’t look baduy at all as he poured out bucketfuls of emotion in many of the bittersweet love songs.
But hey, this kid could rock, too, and this he demonstrated in a cover of Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule the World,” though the band’s arrangement had a pop ballad intro.
His version of his friend Daniel Bedingfield’s “Gotta Get Through This” was very interesting to those who didn’t know the song, which Archuleta mashed up with snippets of The Police’s “Message in a Bottle.”

Last night David Archuleta performed in Nashville for Invisible Children's Break the Silence. His six song set consumed of one song from his latest album, The Other Side of Down, two from his debut and three covers. But one cover stuck out from them all.
David covered Daniel Bedingfield's "Gotta Get Thru This", but with a twist. Towards the end, he added in lyrics to Sting's "Message in a Bottle". The perfect mash-up as the songs blended amazingly while David's new guitarist played acoustic and his new drummer took to bongos.
As for David, he sang this song like nothing's he's ever sung before. Usually a soulful crooner, this sound and vibe was a bit different for David, but he definitely pulled it off. His voice alone went to a whole new level, rarely heard from David. Is this the new approach David has been aiming for? More recently David has been hard at work writing his own music, will it be anything like this new cover? Whatever it may be, it'll sure be some great stuff. And we can all just keep David's "Gotta Get Thru This" on repeat until then.
