David Archuleta will perform at Stadium of Fire in Provo on July 2.
David Archuleta, the Season 7 runnerup on "American Idol," will be facing some pretty big changes in the months ahead. The 20-year-old singer recently separated from his record label and his management group.
He shares some of the background behind those decisions in a recent video blog.
On Thursday, Archuleta was on hand for the announcement that he will be performing with headliner Brad Paisley at this year's annual Stadium of Fire patriotic event on July 2 at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo. Archuleta made some brief general remarks to those in attendance at the press conference before breaking off for smaller and more formal interviews with members of the media.
I was able to sit in with two other media members for a few questions, before getting a brief one-on-one with the one-time "American Idol" sensation. During this time, when asked if there was a message he was hoping to put out with his music, Archuleta seemed to touch on the recent big changes in his musical career while talking about his optimistic nature.
"With my music, I just hope that performing this year will make people feel good -- to get people thinking positively and looking at the future optimistically," he said. "That's just what I've been trying to focus on lately this last year. Even though we don't always know where we're going or what's going to happen next in our lives, there's always something to look forward to, and always a reason to stay optimistic. There's tough times, ups and downs, but life is good. Life is tough, but life is good. That's just the kind of thing I hope to get going, and I hope to represent Utah well to that home crowd [at Stadium of Fire]."
Archuleta said he has interacted with Paisley a couple times, most notably when presenting him an award at the American Music Awards.
"I think Brad Paisley is just one of those real people out there in the music industry," Archuleta said. "He's one of those genuine people. So it will be really great to share the stage with him that night. It will be a really fun time.
"He'd be a pretty cool person to get to perform with just because he's really talented, and also, like I said, really real. I always respect and admire when people are real and themselves, and true to who they are."
I asked Archuleta, who first performed at Stadium of Fire as a 12-year-old in 2003 when he sang the National Anthem, to discuss the additional challenges he might face taking his act to a stadium, as opposed to the more intimate venues with which he may be more familiar.
"With the bigger audiences, there's a lot more just kind of adrenaline pumping," he said. "A lot more of that ... you get a lot more anxious before you get up there on stage. You just don't know what all those people are going to think of you, if you're going to get the crowd pumping the way you should and things like that. But it's just really exciting, too. Just getting to perform for an audience that big for something like a July 4th celebration is really great. And then [singing] to a crowd from Utah, being from Utah, is really just a wonderful thing. I hope I won't let the nerves get to me too much, but I'm really excited to get to do this. I'm very honored that they would invite me back to do this, a full-out performance this time."
Carl Bacon, senior executive producer of Stadium of Fire, said he was sold on inviting Archuleta after seeing him perform one of a series of Christmas concerts in December with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in Salt Lake City.
"Over a million people tried to get tickets," said Bacon. "Over a million. I went and saw one of the performances, and he got standing ovations. He did a fabulous job. I mean, of course I'm interested because we were negotiating at that time for him. I saw tremendous response on the part of the public. He did terrific. I thought he was better than I'd ever heard him. That's the interest we feel the public will have in David."

PROVO — David Archuleta and Brad Paisley will be performing at Stadium of Fire this year. The announcement was made Thursday afternoon.
“It's just really great to get to celebrate here in Utah for the Fourth of July,” Archuleta said, “and I just hope to give a great performance for everyone.”
Archuleta's music career took off after he finished second on "American Idol" in 2008. He also recently released a book, "Chords of Strength: A Memoir of Soul, Song and the Power of Perseverance."
Archuleta currently lives in Los Angeles but was born in Miami and spent most of his childhood in Utah. He says his singing career was inspired by a videotaped performance of "Les Miserables," and he began singing at age 6.
Paisley has enjoyed monumental success over the past decade. He has won several awards, including Academy of Country Music Male Vocalist of the Year. In November, Paisley was named the Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year, a title that eluded him for several years.
He brought his H20 Tour to a full USANA Amphitheatre in September and showed why he is one of country music's top entertainers.
Tickets for the event range from $30 to $120 and go on sale March 4. The event is on Saturday, July 2 at 8 p.m. at BYU's Lavell Edwards Stadium.
Stadium of Fire entertainment has gone back and forth the last few years between a youth movement and its long-favored country music format. This year, both interests will be served as country superstar Brad Paisley and "American Idol" favorite David Archuleta will be the featured entertainment on July 2 at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
America's Freedom Festival at Provo, which oversees the event, announced the headline performers Thursday.Paisley, who has been racking up No. 1 country hits for years - 18 total, including 14 consecutive - has earned three Grammys, 14 Country Music Association Awards, and 13 Academy of Country Music Awards. In addition, he is the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year.
"I'm proud to be invited to celebrate America at Stadium of Fire," Paisley told the Daily Herald through his publicist. "We're going to do all we can to make it a night to remember."
Archuleta, of course, is the Utah native who tugged at America's heartstrings while finishing runnerup on Season 7 of the Fox-TV juggernaut "American Idol." His performances on that show, as well as his subsequent solo career, have made him a household name, not only in Utah, but across the nation.
The pairing of Paisley and Archuleta strikes a nice balance between country and youth interests that America's Freedom Festival officials were striving to bridge.
"I think this is going to be a blockbuster combination," said Carl Bacon, America's Freedom Festival Foundation trustee and senior executive producer of the event. "We're just really pleased with the lineup. I think it has broad appeal. In the past, we've had some youth performers. Last year, we raised the level of age a bit, and now this year, we've got excellent balance for the interests of all ages - youth and adults."

David Archuleta Explains Split with Record Label, Management
David Archuleta was not exactly dumped by Jive Records, the "American Idol" runner-up said in a video blog posted Tuesday on his official YouTube channel, despite the many headlines to that effect that have popped up since Friday.
"It just felt like the right time to part ways," Archuleta said in the video blog post, titled "Decisions, decisions."
Regular Ministry readers already heard of the split Friday as a parting of the ways between Archie and Jive, though we'd now like to add that the 20-year-old said he's broken up with his management team as well.
"Decisions," Archuleta had tweeted cryptically on Thursday -- anyone seeing a theme yet? -- the day before the split with Jive went public. "They are scary things before knowing what could happen after you make them, but I'm excited for what the future holds."
He spoke Tuesday about how Jive had changed as a company, mentioning his own growing self-awareness. There were, he said, "offers that I continue working with them, but it just didn't feel like the right thing. I loved working with them, they've been so great, you know, the people there are just awesome ... I've learned a lot from them."
About his management team? "I realized that this is not where I need to be right now," he said. Then, because he's David Archuleta, he clarified and praised: "Not like they were doing anything bad or anything wrong, you know, they've been great."
He told fans he's been working on writing, solo, to see what comes out, and is figuring out what direction he wants to head in as an artist.
"Only recently I've learned ... it's an obvious thing, but it just took me a while to realize," he said, "I have control over my life. The decisions I make, that's what's going to make or break not [only] my career, but my life as well."
"I'm sorry for scaring you guys," he said.
Last week, we reported that David Archuleta was dropped from Jive Records after the sales of his last album were less than stellar, to say the least.
At the time, we felt really bad for him, but considering he's so young, we also felt like that being set free from the label might also open him up to create new music without their involvement. Apparently, Archie agrees with us as he's posted a YouTube video, explaining his side of the story of what went down with Jive.
Take a listen to David talk about his "decision" and how its going to affect his career from now on. (above)
So grown up. He's really taking this massive change in stride. Good for him!
Don't worry about David Archuleta, fans.
Yes, the former American Idol finalistwas dropped by[left] Jive Records last week, but he's recorded a new video blog entry in which he discusses the state of his career and sounds optimistic about what's ahead.
"It took me a while to realize that have control of my life," Archuleta says. "The decisions that I make, that's what's going to break not necessarily just my career, but my life, too. So I'm just excited where to go, the direction that I'm hoping to go now with music."
We have a feeling loyal followers will stick with Archie wherever that takes him, won't they?
(UPDATE) DAVID ARCHULETA EXPLAINS WHY HE LEFT JIVE RECORDS; SCOTT MCENTYRE ENGAGED
Season 7 runner up David Archuleta, after his second album disappointed, agreed to split ways from Jive Records, according to Hollywood Reporter.
That second album, “The Other Side of Down,” sold only 67,000 copies and generated no radio hits. His first album sold more than one million copies.
UPDATE: David has clarified that he left Jive Records, not the other way around.
“They’re changing as a company. And, then, I feel like I’m changing as an artist. I’m changing the direction I’m going, too. There were offers to continue working with them, but it just didn’t feel like the right thing now.”
American Idol's David Archuleta is breaking his silence on why he left Jive Records and his management company last week.
"Sorry for scaring you guys," the pop star tells his fans in a nearly 8-minute long video blog posted on YouTube
Archuleta, who was the runner up to David Cook in season seven of Idol, says he left his record label because it is "changing as a company" and he's "changing as an artist."
The 20-year-old claims that although management at Jive has changed recently, he was offered to stay with the company, but "It just didn't feel like the right thing."
So what's next for the young star? "I've been writing by myself to see what comes out of me -- not to be self conscious ... It's just been really cool," Archuleta explains.
"I just want to make sure that what I'm sharing is real and something I feel a real connection to," he continues.
Sounding older than his years, Archuleta adds that sometimes, "You have to follow your gut."
It seems miscommunications is the order of the day!
David Archuleta gave us a blog today explaining his future plans with music and his new career moves. He explained Jive is changing and it just felt like the right time to part ways. He feels he is changing as an artist and he need to focus on what direction he intends to follow.
Offers were made to continue with Jive but David felt it was the right move to make so he can continued with his songwriting. Not having a great deal of time to really write what he wants, he wants to make sure whatever it is that he's sharing with his fans is real and can connect to them. He has also parted with his management company as he didn't feel they were going in the same direction.
Taking control of his life is formost on his mind. He is excited about the direction he is heading for his career and his life. Congratulations!
It just goes to show you that you shouldn't take information for a fact until it comes from the horses mouth. Even thoses with good intentions can mislead fans. Sources who say they had confirmation that David was released, dropped, ousted, booted or let go should be embarresed, including myself.
("He was up for renewal and for reasons we have not been privy to they decided not to offer a new contract".)
My apologies to David and his many fans for jumping the gun and adding heartache to a situation already disturbing.
David also suggested that in the near future he has some exciting projects coming up and he will let us know about this as soon as he can. Lets hope it has something to do with singing!!
Thank you everyone!
David Archuleta addresses his split from Jive Records in the new video blog he posted to his YouTube channel Tuesday. "I know a lot of you have been worried about it," he says.
Noting that Sony Music president Barry Weiss and David's A&R representative, Jeff Fenster, both had departed the organization recently, David says, "They're changing as a company. And, then, I feel like I'm changing as an artist. I'm changing the direction I'm going, too. There were offers to continue working with them, but it just didn't feel like the right thing now."
David also has left his management company. "It took me a while to realize that have control of my life," he says. "The decisions that I make, that's what's going to break not necessarily just my career, but my life, too. So I'm just excited where to go, the direction that I'm hoping to go now with music.
David apologizes if he scared any of his fans but thanks them for their support. "It means a lot ... that you're still supportive, still positive, and I appreciate that so much."
Just wanted to fill you guys in on what's been happening lately with some of the decisions that have been on my mind lately. Sorry again for how long it is but wanted to make sure I got everything in. Had a great time with my little sister this weekend going to the Monster Jam, Six Flags, and other things. Been excited about songwriting too and can't wait for you guys to hear what may come from it!
